IKAMA members contribute: IKAMA Surya Scholarship (ISS) Program 2007/2008



IKAMA Surya Scholarship continues to support the underprivileged students. A total of 47 students received the second installment of their scholarship on 3 and 4 March 2008. The scholarships were not intended to pay for their tuition fees, but instead to pay for the study expenses such as uniforms, shoes, books, stationeries and sometimes bicycles, which were often, exceeded their annual school fees.

The students keenly waited until they were called one by one. A panel of sponsors interviewed them to ask questions such as: what the money (from first installment) was used for, how it assisted their studies and what their plans were. Professor Indrajati Kohar, one of the sponsors, commented that these students deserved to continue to finish at least their basic education, while Mr Bagus Kamajaya – an RMIT alumni, brought his friend, Mr Arditto – a University of Wollongong alumni, along with his camera crew to capture the students’ reactions and messages.

IALF has been a devoted supporter of ISS since 1995, and this time represented by Alex Gough, came to greet their sponsored students, and gave out presents on top of scholarships. IALF intends to sponsor these students up until they graduate high schools. These students, naturally, still have to prove it to the panel that they perform well at school, to be able to continue the scheme.

The students and their parents were wearing their biggest smile on the day to express their gratitude, because the money not only allow them to continue with basic education but also funded their side needs, like bicycles to go to school on.
